always difficult due to the limitations of the computer screen. The Past. Now. There are several ways to format text, but primarily the following are used;
all of which Black Magic gives you in a What You See Is What You Get manner. Text attributes Tabs Margins Page Breaks Justification Centering Text
Indenting Text Judicious use of these methods of formatting text can lead to an attractive
yet functional document. Typically with most word processors of
the past, you had to put special codes
into the text to make a word bold face
or italics. And even then it didn't
look bold faced or italicized. With Black Magic, that is a thing of the past. Black Magic will display on screen both
bold face and italics type, underlined
text and double underlined text and any
combinations of these attributes. This type of display is called WYSIWYG,
or What You See Is What You Get. Text Attributes Combinations Underlining Text attributes such as boldface, underlining, and italics are all displayed
on screen in Black Magic. Attributes are set through the use of blocks in
conjunction with the function keys. The following table lists the keys usd for attribute setting. Key Combination Attribute <F6> Bold Face <Alt> <F6> Italic Type <Ctrl> _ Double Underlining _ (UnderScore) Single Underlining Attributes are assigned to text in the following manner. First a block is
marked, and then one of the attribute keys is pressed. You will notice that
the entire block takes on the attribute that you pressed. Removal Once a block of text has had an attribute set, removing it is done by
re-marking the block as the same attribute. For example, if a block has been
made into bold text, then the bold text would be removed by re-marking the
block as bold text. Combinations Attributes may be combined to create an impressive effect. This is done by
marking a block first as one attribute (bold for example) and then a second
attribute (italics for example). Underlining Underlining in Black Magic is done in through the use of blocks. To underline
a block press the underscore key (located one key to the left of the
backspace, looks like _"). To do double unerlining, simply press <Ctrl> <UnderScore> instead of simply <UnderScore> Using blocks to underline something is very similar to setting a text
attribute (described above). First the block is defined, then the key
combination for the underlining is struck, and it's done. Again, reversing the
underlining is done by re-marking the block and re-underlining it to cancel the original underlining. The underlining commands can be combined with the attributes described above
to create additional effects. Tabs Tabs are one of the basic elements of text formatting. In Black Magic, tabs
are treated as a single amount of spaces assigned to the <Tab> key. This
means that if the tab key is set to five (5), pressing it will move the cursor
five (5) spaces from its current position. There is only one tab setting in
Magic. It is set from the configuration menu by altering the default setting. The tab can be also set in the following manner: <Alt> T Number <Enter> Here the "Number" is used to indicate that a number should be input here as
the Tab value. The value entered may be any number from 1 - 79. Margins More on Margins The Margin commands in Black Magic have now been enhanced and changed from
what is stated in the manual. There are three ways to change the margins in
Black Magic: <Alt> L, <Alt> R, and The Configuration Screen. <ALT> L and <Alt> R are both used to change the margins in the current
window. Individual Window To change the margins for an individual window, press either <Alt> L or <Alt>
R. A dialog box will then come up for you to enter the new margin into.
After entering the new values and pressing <Enter>, the current window will be reformatted to the new margins. Advantages Configuration Screen The other method of changing margins is through the use of the Configuration
screen. When the margins are adjusted on the configuration screen, they are
adjusted for all windows yet to be created. What this means is that when you
change a margin setting on the Configuration screen, it does not reformat the
entire document to those new margins; instead any new reference links that you
make will have the new margins automatically. Page Breaks Page breaks are codes that are embedded in the text that cause a printer to
end the current page at the point of the code, and resume printing at the top
of the next physical page. To insert a page break in your text, press: <Ctrl> B This will embed a page break in the text on screen at the cursor position.
Page breaks are shown as a double colon symbol like this: :: Whenever <Ctrl> B is pressed, a new line is started and this symbol is
embedded at the first position of that line on the screen. Justification More On Justification Justification has now been implemented in this version of Black Magic. The
default for justification in Black Magic is that of left justified text. This
is what is always shown on screen in editing mode. The other options for
justification are Right Justify (<Ctrl> <F8>) and Full Justification (<Alt> <F8>). To change a window's justification, press one of the below
control keys: Key Effect <Shift> <F8> Left Justified <Alt> <F8> Full Justified <Ctrl> <F8> Right Justified When one of the above keys is pressed, a dialog box will come up and query
you as to whether or not the window's justification should be changed. By
answering 'Y', the window will be justified as per the key combination that you pressed. Note: The effects of a justification command are not apparent on screen, the
justification only appears in reader mode (<Alt> <F2>). Centering Text Centering text is as simple as putting the cursor on the same line as the text
you want centered, and pressing <F8>. This will take the line and center it
within the current margins. It does not matter if the text that you are centering is a single word, or a full line of text, either will be centered.
If all you wish is a single word centered, then press <F8> on the same line as
the single word. Indenting Text Black Magic's method of indenting text is done through the use of the <Shift>
<Tab> key combination. (For reference the tab key is located on the left hand
edge of the keyboard in the upper corner) To indent something merely strike
<Shift> <Tab>. This will automatically indent the cursor and whatever it is
resting on five (5) spaces from its original position. The current window is simply the active
area or node of the document that you
are typing in. The advantage to being able to set margins on an individual window basis is that in a large hypertext document, you may wish to use various different ways of formatting the document.
